Surgical periodontal therapy: For traditional periodontal surgery, your teeth and gums will be thoroughly cleaned after which you will receive local anesthesia. The surgery will involve an incision being made in the gum to allow a small flap to be made. The flap will be held back gently to reveal the pocket of infection underneath. The infected area is cleaned out and disinfected to kill off any remaining bacteria.
To help the gum and supporting bone tissue regenerate around the tooth, a graft is introduced in the area. The graft is usually taken from the palate of the mouth and provides a substrate for new tissues to grow. Once the graft has been fitted, the flap is sutured. There would be some amount of bleeding and swelling of the gums after the surgery, but this heals in a few days.
