PerioProtect

Periodontitis and gingivitis are fairly common dental conditions among Americans. Yet for the longest time, there was no long-term, non-surgical treatment available to rectify these gum diseases. For years, root planing and scaling have been carried out with the help of antibiotics. The good news is that advancements in dentistry finally led to the development of a minimally-invasive procedure for gum disease prevention and dental health restoration. The procedure is called ‘PerioProtect’.

What is PerioProtect?

To put it simply, this is a comprehensive dental treatment, which is tailor-made for each individual patient and helps in managing biofilms forming in the periodontal pockets.

The goal of this advanced dental treatment is to curb the growth of oral biolfilm, but with minimal antibiotics or surgery. Hence, a combination of useful treatments is used by the dentist during the procedure. This usually includes a chemical debriding non-invasive therapy and routine manual debriding procedures.

Dr. Nadia Oneal works at All Dental Tampa in Florida and is a specialist in executing the PerioProtect treatment. She explains that ‘biofilm’ is essentially a type of layering comprising exopolysaccharides, bacteria, enzymes, bacterial chemotoxins, proteinaceous materials and other such products. With the continuous growth of the biofilm, some of the layers have the potential of becoming anaerobic and can therefore harbor greater pathogenic bacteria. And research suggests that while antibiotics are capable of penetrating the biofilm, they cannot successfully destroy the bacteria.

How does PerioProtect work?

In the PerioProtect treatment, the customized Perio Tray helps in placing the medication deep underneath the gums. This allows the medication to battle the infection-causing bacteria. PerioProtect is an excellent way to prevent periodontal disease because brushing, flossing and rinsing may not always reach the deep-rooted bacteria in the gums.
