Sedation Dentistry Tampa

Many times, patients don’t get the dental care they require because of their fear of the dentist. The fear of the pain and discomfort can put people off visiting the dentist for years, which unfortunately could result in more dental problems. To help people get past these fears, dentists use sedation, and All Dental Tampa offers some of the best sedation dentistry Tampa has available. Sedation is the use of drugs that calm the patient’s anxiety and helps them relax. Thanks to sedation dentistry, many more patients can get dental care without the pain and discomfort. The numbing and relaxing effects of sedation drugs allows the dentist to carry out a procedure for a patient while the patient is fully conscious but not feeling uncomfortable.

What types of sedation are available?

There are three main types of sedation available which include:

  • Oral sedation which is taken in the form of prescription pills
  • Nitrous oxide gas, also known as laughing gas, which is administered by the dentist
  • IV sedation, which is also administered by the dentist through intravenous injection

Depending on the kind of procedure you are undergoing and your own personal requirements, the dentist will decide which type is best for you. At All Dental, we administer oral sedation and nitrous oxide gas when our patients require sedation for a procedure.

In what situations is sedation used?

Sedation in dentistry is used for a number of reasons. Some of them include:

  • To help anxious patients relax during a dental procedure
  • To help people with dental phobia undergo dental procedures
  • To dull the pain of certain procedures like root canals or a tooth extraction
  • To calm down patients with clinical anxiety disorders
  • When a patient is allergic to local anesthesia

Many simple procedures like an oral examination, teeth cleaning, and even jaw x-rays don’t require sedation unless the patient has clinical anxiety or dental phobia. Patients who suffer from these disorders might find just sitting in the dentist’s chair terrifying, in which case, sedation can be very useful to help calm them down.

How is sedation administered?

If you are undergoing a dental procedure at All Dental, we will keep you informed of your options and whether or not you will require sedation. You will first be given a full oral examination and we will take down your medical history. You will need to inform us if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, drug allergies or if you are specifically allergic to anesthesia. Once we have your history, we will be better positioned to decide the best course of treatment for you.

For oral sedation, we would need to write a prescription which you will need to fill out at a drugstore. The pills will need to be taken about an hour before the procedure and we will give you all the instructions you need. Make sure to follow the instructions carefully to ensure that all goes well at the time of the procedure. It is important that patients take the medication at the right time so that they are ready to undergo the procedure at the appointed time.

What can I expect to feel?

For nitrous oxide sedation, you will not be required to take any sedation drugs before the procedure. While you are sitting in the dentist’s chair, the drug is administered to you in the form of a gas. Because nitrous oxide wears off quickly, we will need to administer the gas a few times during the procedure as required. The advantage of nitrous oxide wearing off quickly is that you can be fully alert within minutes after the procedure.

During both these types of sedation, you will be completely conscious and aware during the procedures but you will feel a bit drowsy while under the effect of the drug. Pain, discomfort, and anxiety will be under control, but you will not be asleep.

There will be certain surgical procedures which will require either local or general anesthesia which depends on individual cases. If you do require to be anesthetized, we will first explain the whole procedure to you and any risks that might be involved.
