Wisdom Tooth Removal & Extractions

Modern day food has changed the way we eat and resulted in a smaller jaw. Our wisdom teeth which usually erupt between the ages of sixteen and twenty five are our third set of molars. By the time they cut through the gum they have little to no room to emerge. The lack of space in our jaws causes wisdom teeth to come out at odd angles, push against other teeth and crowd the mouth. A lot of people find wisdom teeth very uncomfortable and even painful. To accommodate all the teeth comfortably in the mouth dentists sometimes have to do a wisdom tooth extraction or surgical removal.

What are the main reasons for wisdom tooth extraction

  • The wisdom teeth which grow right at the back of the jaw are trapped inside the gum or in the jawbone and are causing a lot of pain.
  • They grow out at an angle that makes them push against other teeth.
  • They cause overcrowding in the mouth because the jaw is too small.
  • They have cavities that have gone too deep into the tooth.

What happens during a wisdom tooth extraction and surgical removal?

At All Dental, our team of dentists are skilled in handling these issues and you can count on us to perform the most expert wisdom teeth removal Tampa has available. When you first consult with us we will give you a full oral examination and might take a few x-rays if required. Once we have a clear idea of your jaw structure and the angle of your wisdom teeth we will be able to tell you if you need an extraction. The whole procedure will be explained to you and we will answer any question you might have.

You will need to tell us if you suffer from any drug allergies or have any pre-existing medical conditions. The procedure needs to be performed under local anesthesia or IV sedation so if you have any known allergies to these drugs be sure to inform us.

If you are under twenty years of age and the roots of your teeth are not fully developed then the extraction procedure will be simpler. We will explain how the procedure is carried out before getting started. For adults past the age of twenty years or if your teeth have not cut through the gum yet, a full surgical procedure might be required to remove the wisdom teeth. X-rays of your jaws will give us a better idea of how your wisdom teeth are growing and what you can expect from the surgery. On the day of the surgery you will be put under local anesthesia or IV sedation so that you will not feel any pain.

During the procedure the performing dentist will cut into your gum and with the help of special tools remove each tooth that needs to be extracted. The incision will then be sutured with dissolvable stitches. Gauze pads will be placed around the area of the incision to absorb the blood. The whole procedure should take no more that forty five minutes for a regular surgery. As you will be anesthetized or sedated during the procedure we advise that you don’t attempt to drive yourself home but arrange for someone to drive you instead. We will give you a full set of aftercare instructions which when followed carefully will help you heal faster.

What to expect after the procedure

A few things you can expect to not do for a few days after the procedure would include eating anything too hot or too hard, vigorously brushing your teeth in the area of the sutures and rinsing your mouth too vigorously. Usually any pain or swelling you feel after the surgery can be relieved with an ice pack and will heal in a few days.

Please contact us if you experience excessive bleeding, formation of pus or you develop a fever, after the procedure. We will do everything we can to make sure that you heal safely and quickly.
