Bone Grafting & Sinus Lift

The sinus lift procedure is performed to add bone to the upper jaw, i.e. the area where the premolars and molars are located. The surgery may also sometimes be referred to as ‘sinus augmentation’. A dentist performs a sinus lift by adding a bone between your maxillary sinuses, located on both sides of the nose, and the jaw.

Preserving the jaw and teeth with bone grafting

The teeth in your mouth are fixed in the bone which forms the lower and upper jaws. They are held firmly in position owing to the supporting bone and strong ligaments beneath the teeth. It is possible to lose that supporting bone in the mouth due to various reasons. The loss of this bone can cause the teeth to become weak and they may even fall out after some time. However, the regeneration of the lost bone with bone grafting can help preserve the jaw and teeth.

At All Dental Tampa, our dentists specialize in performing the bone grafting procedure for sinus lift. New and advanced technology, including noninvasive techniques and growth factors, have reduced recovery time and made the sinus lift procedure increasingly acceptable among patients.

What is bone grafting and how does it help?

A bone grafting procedure is essentially aimed at replacing the lost bone with an eco-friendly bone material. It is important to note that the graft substance itself doesn’t become the replaced bone; rather it encourages the new bone tissue to grow and fill the space that has the graft material placed in it. The graft material is harmlessly absorbed into your bloodstream.

In most cases this procedure is performed in preparation for dental implants, when the patient lacks sufficient bone mass to sustain the dental prosthetics. Once the procedure has been completed, you will then have to wait, most likely several months, while the graft creates enough new, strong bone to ensure that the implant will be stable and secure. If you only require a minor graft, then it is possible, that the procedure might be able to be done at the same time as the implant surgery. This will be determined by the doctor.

Enhance your facial appearance with bone grafting treatment

At the initial consultation, the dentist will take a few x-rays before the sinus lift procedure as this will allow them to assess the structure of your sinus and jaw. A CT scan may also be taken as part of surgery preparation.

Restoring your bone to its previous form following gum disease, trauma or tooth loss is important for several reasons. The jaw and other facial bones support the skin and muscles that are responsible for our facial appearance. Without the support of the underlying bone, our faces can sag and start to look prematurely aged.
